SYNOPSIS

Ever since the one time Andie Weber threw caution to the wind - and paid the price for it - she’s learned that it’s safer and smarter to live life playing by the rules. Now she’s got a great apartment, a steady job, and a wonderful boyfriend in Colin; he’s sweet, stable, and essentially perfect – except maybe for the fact that his best friend is Chase.

Chase McGuire lives his carefree, unstructured life strictly for himself. Dripping sarcasm and oozing wit, he refuses to censor his feelings or opinions for anyone, making no apologies for either and wearing his abrasiveness like a badge of honor. No one has ever gotten under Andie’s skin the way Chase does – and vice versa.

So when Andie and Chase find themselves forced to take a two-day road trip together, they are already dreading an inevitable all-out war. But as the trip progresses, and the undeniable friction that has always defined their relationship slowly begins to wear away their preconceived notions of each other, Andie and Chase discover they both have a lot to learn about life, courage, happiness, and the age-old battle between logic and love.

MON AVIS

La lecture du synopsis me laissait présager un 'road trip'... J'avais adoré 'The Edge of Never' qui en était un... Mais avec Emancipating Andie, j'ai plutôt l'impression que le synopsis m'a menti...

"We judge people by our own standards of happiness... What makes you happy might not make that woman over there happy. But human beings have a terrible habit of thinking they know what's best for each other."

Ça fait plus d'un an qu'Andie est avec Colin. Avec lui, même si tout est prévisible, elle se sent en sécurité.

Mais la vision de sa relation parfaite va vite voler en éclat lorsqu'elle se voit contrainte de partir sur la route avec Chase, un ami de Colin, pendant deux jours...

Déjà première déception en commençant le roman : celui est écrit à la troisième personne. C'est pas une drame en soit, mais rien à faire, je n'adhère pas à ce mode de narration car je me sens moins concernée par l'histoire. Parfois j'arrive à passer au-dessus de cette impression avec certains romans mais ici, ce ne fût malheureusement pas le cas.

Les personnages m'ont laissé complètement indifférente... Enfin non pas totalement : Andie m'a fortement agacée par son caractère étroit et son manque d'humour.

Même Chase ne m'a pas séduite ! Mis à part sa répartie, je ne lui ai pas trouvé beaucoup de charme...

Les personnages sont simplement peu approfondis donc difficile de vraiment trouver des points d'accroche.

"I do what I want to do. I refuse to hold back what I'm thinking or what I'm feeling anymore. And if someone doesn't like it, then they don't need to be in my life. If that makes me an asshole, then so be it. I don't wan't to spend any more time trying to make other people happy. Life is much more enjoyable when you're surrounded by people who just accept you for you."

Mais ma grande déception c'est bien sûr ce road trip que le synopsis m'avait promis ! Le voyage en voiture doit faire en tout et pour tout 5 petits chapitres... Inutile de vous dire que ce fût la douche froide pour moi qui m'attendait à lire un livre principalement sur le sujet !

Donc en gros, moins de 48h suffisent à Andie pour remettre une relation de plus d'un an en question... Bon perso, j'ai trouvé que tout allait un brin trop vite et que l'histoire n'était pas assez approfondie... mais en 280 pages, je m'y attendais plus ou moins.

De plus, le récit ne nous réserve aucune surprise : tout est trop téléphoné et trop cliché.

En résumé, ce roman fût pour moi une déception. Le road trip ne joue pas le rôle important que je m'étais imaginé et j'avoue que ça m'a un peu gâché un début qui ne me semblait déjà pas très prometteur. Au final, ce roman, tout comme ses personnages, m'a laissé complètement indifférente.
